The Gist: Big Day of Giving, the Sacramento region's annual 24-hour giving challenge, is tomorrow, May 7th. Hosted by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, the event invites donors to give to local nonprofits in El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties through a single online platform, with prizes and matching funds to boost donations. Since 2013, more than 60,000 donors have given over $117 million through Big Day of Giving!
Why It Matters: This is the single largest day of charitable giving in the region every year, and it touches almost every corner of community life from food banks and arts groups to refugee services and senior centers. Whether the gift is $10 or $1,000, it goes further with the day's matching funds. To find participating nonprofits:
🏠 Local Family Prints Sacramento’s First 3D Home

The Gist: A family near Skipton Court and Northborough Drive just finished building the city’s first permitted 3D-printed backyard home. A robotic printer layered concrete to form the walls and foundation, marking the first time this tech has cleared official city inspections in a local residential zone. This project moves 3D printing out of the experimental phase and into the real world of Sacramento housing.
Why It Matters: This build shows that high-tech homes can actually meet local safety codes and fit right into a normal neighborhood. It opens the door for more neighbors to build faster, cheaper backyard cottages while bringing new tech jobs to our local construction scene.
