How is it already the final weekend of the State Fair? Summer always seems to speed up right when we finally get into the swing of things. If you have not made it out yet, this is your last chance for midway rides, livestock barns, blue ribbons, and all the fair food you can handle.

There is plenty more happening around Sacramento too. Soak up the season as much as you can!

🐕 Therapy dogs help kids fall in love with reading

The Gist: Local kids gathered at the Carmichael Library on Thursday, July 23, to practice their reading skills with some very special listeners: therapy dogs. The popular Read to a Dog program has served hundreds of children over nearly two decades. Volunteers like 88-year-old Arnie Wildfeuer bring in their gentle pets each week, giving young readers a calm and supportive place to practice aloud.
Why It Matters: Reading skills can slip during summer break, but four-legged friends offer a relaxed, judgment-free audience where children can practice without worrying about making mistakes. A UC Davis study cited by KCRA found that children who read to dogs improved their reading fluency by up to 30%, showing that the program is not only sweet but effective as well.
✈️ Sacramento Airport wants to hear from you
The Gist: Sacramento International Airport has launched a public survey as part of an update to its Airport Master Plan, which will guide development and improvements over the next 20 years. Local residents and travelers can weigh in on flight options, terminal amenities, parking and accessibility. The survey takes just a few minutes and is open through Aug. 14.
Take the survey HERE.
Why It Matters: With passenger traffic growing and major SMForward expansion projects underway, decisions made now will shape how SMF looks and functions for years to come. The airport wants the people who use it to help guide what comes next.

🛸 Flying saucer vibes meet street culture

2820 P St, Sacramento
Set in a converted 1960s Orbit gas station, Suzie Burger serves up serious nostalgia on 29th and P. The walk-up counter keeps things classic with stacked beef burgers, award-winning Philly cheesesteaks, and thick Ghirardelli milkshakes.
Beyond the retro comfort food and easy parking, it doubles as a community hub, hosting Thursday night bike meetups and monthly Second Saturday cruises that bring the neighborhood’s energy right to the patio.

📚 Paperbacks, vintage vinyl, and quiet magic

1114 21st Street, Sacramento
Every city has one indispensable bookstore. In Sacramento, that’s Time Tested Books on 21st. Peter Keat has kept the turn-of-the-century brick shop running since 1981. Tens of thousands of volumes line the shelves, spanning philosophy, history, and a deep collection of older paperbacks.
Wander past the eclectic vinyl wall, explore rare finds, or drop in for author readings. Friendly staff make buying, selling, or special-ordering new titles remarkably simple.
