Welcome to the first Sacramento Insider!
Last week I got to do something that felt bigger than golf. I grabbed my buddy Zach and my boys and we headed out to Campus Commons Golf Course for a quick round. And man… it just felt right. A few years ago when we lost this little course, it felt like we lost a piece of the neighborhood. Seeing it back open — alive, green, and full of people again — honestly put a smile on my face before we even teed off.
There’s something special about a short course. It’s not about grinding over yardages or chasing a personal best. It’s about walking side-by-side, laughing at bad shots, celebrating the random great one, and letting the kids fall in love with the game without feeling overwhelmed. Campus Commons is perfect for that. It’s approachable. It’s quick. It’s the kind of place you can sneak out for nine holes after work or bring your boys to learn how to swing without turning it into a four-hour marathon.

For me, that afternoon wasn’t about birdies or scorecards. It was about Zach and I catching up between shots and watching my boys figure out the rhythm of the game — patience, focus, and shaking off a bad swing. Having this little course back means more than just another place to play. It’s a community spot again. It’s dads and sons, buddies, beginners, and quick sunset rounds. And after losing it once, I don’t think I’ll ever take it for granted again.

🥘 A theatrical dinner party where you’re the VIP

915 Broadway #100, Sacramento
The Kitchen turns the traditional fine-dining experience on its head, trading hushed whispers and stiff linens for a convivial house-party energy that has defined Sacramento’s farm-to-fork pride for over thirty years.
It is an evening of choreographed chaos in the best way possible; between courses of Michelin-starred fare, guests are encouraged to wander into the pantry for freshly shucked oysters or lean over the marble counters to chat with the culinary team mid-prep.
While the menu is a sophisticated love letter to local ranchers and growers, the real magic lies in the unscripted moments: sipping a Bee’s Knees mocktail while watching the staff work in perfect, unstressed sync. It is a local landmark that reminds you why our corner of the valley tastes so good.

🎨 Release some tension: create a messy masterpiece!

600 Broadway suite D, Sacramento
It’s strangely meditative at Smash Sacramento, with the sound of ceramic plates meeting their end, especially after a long week of deadlines and errands. This veteran-owned spot in the heart of our city offers a rare chance to let go of that 2025 lingering stress in the most literal way possible!
Whether you are taking a bat to an old printer or testing your aim with a few throwing knives, the atmosphere is grounded and surprisingly lighthearted. If you prefer a softer touch, their Citrus Heights location has these wonderful splatter paint rooms where you can fling neon hues at a canvas without a single thought about the cleanup.
It is a proud local business that turns a bit of chaos into a shared, memory-making afternoon for everyone involved.

🎲 Game Night at the Museum Tonight

The Gist: The California State Railroad Museum opens its doors at 6 p.m. this evening (Feb.26) for a special after-hours social. This 18+ event brings together tabletop classics, Mario Kart, and a Super Smash Bros tournament in the historic Roundhouse. Between games, you can enjoy vinyl records from a local DJ and drinks from Acheson Wine Company while surrounded by iconic locomotives.
Why It Matters: It is a wonderful way to gather with neighbors for a playful, relaxed event that directly supports our local museum foundation. Doors open at 6 p.m. tonight. A $10 donation is appreciated at the door for those ready to play until 8:30 p.m.
💻 A Shifting Choice for State Work

The Gist: Assembly member Alex Lee has introduced AB 1729 to protect remote work options for California state employees. This bill arrives as a response to a new mandate requiring workers to be in the office four days a week starting this July. The proposed law would require agencies to create clear telework plans and justify any required onsite days based on actual operational needs.
Why It Matters: Keeping these flexible options helps reduce local traffic and carbon emissions while saving millions in taxpayer dollars on office space. State employees are currently scheduled to return to the office four days per week on July 1, 2026.
