Back-to-school season is officially creeping into view, and this year, some Sacramento families are heading into it with a little extra help. We love seeing local resources make a real difference for kids who need them.
Of course, there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy. We rounded up a packed list of events, plus a couple of local spots for when you need good food or a quiet reset.
💻 A digital boost for Marina Vista & Alder Grove families
The Gist: The City of Sacramento recently provided more than 60 retired laptops to the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, which distributed them to residents during a July 17 back-to-school event at Marina Vista. Nearly all of the laptops went to school-aged children, giving local students another tool to help them prepare for the year ahead.
The giveaway is part of a larger effort to improve digital access in affordable housing communities. The City has also helped SHRA develop free Wi-Fi networks at Marina Vista and Alder Grove and is working to bring high-speed fiber internet to 1,500 residential units.
Why It Matters: A reliable computer and internet connection at home can make a world of difference for students trying to complete assignments, access school resources and stay connected. Giving retired City equipment a second life helps more local kids begin the school year with the tools they need, while also giving families better access to job opportunities, health care and other essential online services.
🐾 Sacramento makes room for one more dog
The Gist: Sacramento households will soon be allowed to keep up to four licensed dogs, one more than the current limit of three, under an ordinance approved by the City Council this month. Licensing and spay-or-neuter requirements still apply, while limits for cats and other household animals remain unchanged. The Animal Wellbeing Commission recommended the change to encourage more adoptions and help keep dogs out of the shelter.
Why It Matters: Sacramento families considering one more rescue will soon have room to make it official, while the city hopes the higher limit leads to more adoptions and fewer dogs entering the shelter.
What’s Next: The new limit takes effect at the end of August, 30 days after the ordinance was adopted.
