Shout out to Steve Buzzard and the entire Buzzardball team for more than 25 years of creating memories for Sacramento kids. I got to watch my niece play in the 5th/6th grade girls championship last weekend, and it was everything youth sports should be. Her team battled back from behind, stayed composed, and took their first lead with only seconds left on the clock. Buzzardball works out a deal where these kids get to play the championship games at Golden One Center! What a cool experience for these girls…

The gym absolutely erupted when the final buzzer sounded. Moments like that are what kids will remember for the rest of their lives. Huge credit to Buzzardball for building a program and community that makes those moments possible!

🍕 Freshly fired dough and Friday traditions

400 12th St, Sacramento

With the debut of Dodici Pizzeria, the Adamo family has finally brought their Italian expertise to 12th Street. Specializing in thin, Puglia-style crusts, it’s a neighborhood win for those seeking quality without the fuss.

With Lent in mind, the Norvegese (a clever pairing of smoked salmon, cream cheese, and chives) is a sophisticated choice for Fish Friday. Whether you’re loyal to their classic Margherita or the salty-sweet Mortadella, it’s a welcome addition to our local dining landscape.

🏀 The Best Hour of Their Week

Most youth sports feel like a disorganized chore for parents. Buzzardball flips the script with a polished, "pro-style" experience that kids talk about until next Saturday.

🍎 Local schools earn California Distinguished honors

Photos from sacbee.com

The Gist State Superintendent Tony Thurmond recently named five Sacramento County schools as 2026 California Distinguished Schools. Toby Johnson Middle, McCaffrey Middle, Liberty Ranch High, West Campus, and Winston Churchill Middle earned this recognition for excellence in student achievement and closing academic gaps. These local campuses are among 408 middle and high schools honored across the state this year.

Why It Matters This award highlights the hard work of our local educators and students in maintaining high academic standards for everyone in our community. The schools will be officially celebrated during an awards ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on April 24.

🏨 A Historic Landmark Finds New Purpose

The Gist The former Capitol Park Hotel has been thoughtfully restored and renamed The St. Clare. This downtown landmark now provides 134 one-bedroom apartments for neighbors experiencing homelessness. The project preserved original 1910s details, including a mosaic tile lobby and the historic facade, while adding modern seismic safety and accessibility updates. Residents have access to on-site counseling, community rooms, and new ground-level shops.

Why It Matters This restoration honors our city's architectural history while providing a safe, stable home for those who need it most in the heart of downtown.
