Living in Sacramento, we’re incredibly lucky to have a world-class destination like Lake Tahoe just about 1.5 hours away. April and May might be the most underrated time to go—the weather is crisp, the crowds are lighter, and the scenery is as good as it gets.

We made a last-minute trip up there this past weekend, and it delivered exactly what we needed: fresh air, great views, and some quality family time. It’s a great reminder that you don’t need a big plan to create a great experience. Sometimes the best trips are the spontaneous ones. Where is your favorite last minute trip from Sacramento?

🍹 Cheers! Three Local Favorites Named Best In The West

The Gist: Our local cocktail scene just got a major nod from the Tales of the Cocktail 2026 Spirited Awards. Three Sacramento spots (The Snug, Kru, and Butterscotch Den) landed in the Top 10 for the U.S. West region. They were selected by a panel of over 250 experts, standing tall alongside heavy hitters from Seattle and Maui.
Why It Matters It’s a huge win for neighborhood pride to see our local talent outshine almost the entire West Coast. These awards prove that our bartenders are putting our city on the national map with world-class craftsmanship found right in our own backyards. The regional list gets whittled down to the national top 10 in May, with the ultimate winners announced on Thursday, July 23.
🏥 A New Community Wellness Campus in Little Saigon

The Gist: Sacramento County and WellSpace Health broke ground April 7 on a new 13-acre Community Wellness Campus in South Sacramento’s Little Saigon neighborhood. The first phase will be a 32-bed residential mental health treatment center, with the full campus planned to offer behavioral, dental, and physical health services for Medi-Cal and uninsured residents. The first phase is expected to open in 2027.
Why It Matters: This part of South Sacramento has long needed more accessible healthcare. Building the campus in Little Saigon, and designing it to serve Medi-Cal and uninsured residents, is a meaningful investment in a community that’s often been overlooked.

🍣 A community-backed comeback for hand roll purists.

1050 20th St, Sacramento
Lou’s Sushi is back, finding a permanent home in the former Holy Spirits space. The industrial, moody room centers on a glass-walled kitchen where Chef Lou Valente prepares precise hand rolls and legacy small plates.
Start with the "Sicilian sashimi" or the chicken karaage before diving into a blue crab hand roll. Pair your meal with a Holy Shiitake martini: a savory, mushroom-washed nod to a house classic.

🚲 Keeping the local gears turning smoothly

Since 1991, Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates has been the quiet force behind our city's two-wheeled culture. You likely know them from the bike valets at the Midtown Farmers Market or Republic FC matches, but their reach goes much deeper.
They manage the UpCycle program, which recently provided refurbished bikes to students at Rosa Parks Elementary. With May is Bike Month approaching, logging trips on the NorCal GO app helps celebrate our regional cycling community.
