One of my favorite things about Sacramento is that no matter how long you've lived here, there's always a corner of the city you haven't really explored. Reading about Lacy's mission to walk every street on the grid (see more below!) made me think about how often we rush from one destination to the next without noticing what's in between.

Maybe that's the challenge this week. Take a different route home, stop into a neighborhood you've never spent much time in, or try that restaurant you've driven past a hundred times. You never know what you'll find!

🤠 Sacramento names new City Historian

The Gist: Veteran museum leader Ty Smith will take over as Sacramento’s new City Historian on June 1. Smith brings more than 20 years of experience from roles at Hearst Castle and the California State Railroad Museum. He will lead the Center for Sacramento History, which manages millions of local photos, artifacts, and historic film reels dating back to 1849.
Why It Matters: Smith says his focus is on making local history feel more inclusive and easier for residents to connect with. For Sacramento, that could mean more people seeing their own families, neighborhoods, and communities reflected in the city’s story.
🚶♀️ Lacy Walks the Grid
The Gist: Sacramento native Lacy has spent the past year and a half walking every single street on the downtown and Midtown grid. She started in the winter of 2024 and began tracking her progress in a paper journal and on Instagram in March 2025. CapRadio recently joined her on April 30, 2026, to walk 27th Street, a 45-minute trek. With only about 10 streets left to go, she is nearing the end of her journey.
Why It Matters: It’s easy to get stuck in our daily routines and miss the vibrant neighborhoods right around the corner. Lacy's project is a beautiful reminder that our city is full of friendly neighbors and hidden gems. Her journey has inspired locals to step outside their comfort zones and explore their own backyards with fresh eyes.

🥙 A hospitality masterclass hiding in plain sight

2316 Watt Ave, Sacramento
Sumer Nights shifts your perspective on Watt Avenue. This Iraqi-style Mediterranean spot opens with a masterclass in hospitality, greeting you with complimentary chef’s choice appetizers, warm bread, and a comforting lentil soup before you even order.
The move here is the juicy beef and lamb kebab plate, though the remarkably crunchy falafel and vibrant pickled beets deserve a spot on the table. It is fresh and perfectly suited for an impromptu weekend dinner on the patio.

🧘♀️ A sanctuary heated to ninety-three degrees

807 16th St, Sacramento
DOMA means home. Founded by Katlyn Matic in Midtown, this independent studio focuses purely on heated yoga and Pilates. Every session runs in a humid, ninety-three-degree room designed to help you go deeper.
The lineup includes everything from dynamic Vinyasa to focused Pilates Core 45, always ending with refreshing cold citrus towels. With a roster of twenty instructors, the studio takes pride in cultivating real community, recently celebrating the graduation of nineteen new teacher trainees.
