Local pizza joints are great for all kinds of occasions. Last week, we gathered at CAPS Pizza to celebrate my four favorite Pisces. My wife, boys, and dad are all Pisces, so we get to knock out four birthdays with one party. Pretty cool for me to celebrate four of my favorite people in one day.
And CAPS Pizza serves as a great reminder that family is the most important thing in the world. The story behind CAPS Pizza is a family story.
In 2016, Troy and Cheri Pryor lost their son, Cory Allen Pryor (CAP). When they decided to open a family pizza place in his honor, the name CAPS was born. If you’ve been inside CAPS, you’ve probably noticed tributes to Cory throughout the restaurant, from skateboards and photos to the rustic, casual decor. The family set out to create a fun environment that Cory would’ve enjoyed spending time in with friends and family.
Beyond the meaningful story, CAPS also happens to have some of the best wood-fired pizza I’ve ever had. Go check them out for yourself!

🍳 Historic charm meets a premier garden brunch

1112 2nd St, Sacramento
Stepping into The Firehouse feels like a nod to Sacramento’s storied past, yet the atmosphere remains effortlessly sophisticated.
While the grand dining rooms are iconic, the lush, ivy-walled courtyard is the real draw for a sun-drenched holiday meal. This Easter weekend, the three-course menu features standout plates like the Dungeness crab benedict with green goddess hollandaise and a delicate hibiscus blood orange bar.
It is a tranquil restaurant for a memorable open-air celebration.

🌹 A quiet morning among the petals

1317 15th St, Sacramento
The State Capitol Park World Peace Rose Garden is the perfect place to spend a slow April afternoon. You’ll be surprised with how easy it is to lose track of time while wandering past the flowers or finding a shaded bench to just sit and visit.
Between the towering sequoias and the first flush of spring color, the atmosphere feels completely removed from the city rush. It’s truly a lovely local treasure for a quick reset!

🎨 Taking Flight: A Six-Month Celebration of Sacramento’s Own RCAF

The Gist Our local arts community is coming together for InFormation, a massive regional tribute to the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF), a legendary collective of artists and activists founded right here at Sac State in 1970. From now through June 2026, 16 different organizations (including the Crocker Art Museum, the Sacramento History Museum, and libraries across Davis and Roseville) are hosting a flurry of activations.
Why It Matters This is a chance to see how art can actually change a community. It’s a beautiful moment of neighborhood pride, bringing together the original founding artists and their descendants to make sure the RCAF’s "spirit of the struggle" continues to soar for the next generation.
☀️ A Brighter Future: SMUD Awards $524K to Local Heroes

The Gist: Twenty-five Sacramento nonprofits are receiving a combined $524,000 through the ninth annual Shine program from Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). This year’s group was chosen from more than 100 applicants, with each nonprofit receiving a grant ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 that will be matched through its own fundraising efforts. The funding is going toward projects that support a zero-carbon future, including STEM education, clean energy job training, and efforts to make neighborhoods more resilient and affordable.
Why It Matters: It’s encouraging to see investment like this going into so many different corners of the community. As Sacramento works toward a greener future, this helps make sure more people get to be part of it too.
